Joseph Turow, Ph.D.

Joseph Turow, Ph.D., the Robert Lewis Shayon Professor of Communication, recently published the article “A Guide to the Digital Advertising Industry That’s Watching Your Every Click,” in the European Business Review. The article is an excerpt from Prof. Turow’s book The Daily You: How the New Advertising Industry Is Defining Your Identity and Your Worth (Yale University Press, 2011).

From the introductory paragraph:

At the start of the 21st century, the advertising industry is guiding one of history’s most massive stealth efforts in social profiling. At this point you may hardly notice the results of this trend. You may find you’re getting better or worse discounts on products than your friends. You may notice that some ads seem to follow you around the Internet. Every once in a while a website may ask you if you like a particular ad you just received. Or perhaps your cell phone has told you that you will be rewarded if you eat in a nearby restaurant where, by the way, two of your friends are hanging out this very minute.”

Prof. Turow also recently gave a keynote address on the challenges and opportunities for digital journalism at a meeting of academics and journalists in Helsinki, Finland; and delivered a talk at the University of Tampere, Finland on the transformation of the advertising industry and its implications for media and the larger society.
