Carlin Romano
Carlin Romano will be a guest on the National Public Radio program
Radio Times With Marty Moss-Coane (WHYY Philadelphia) on Tuesday, July 3, talking about his new book, America the Philosophical. A review of the book was the front-page item in the Sunday, July 1 edition of The New York Times Book Review . Reviewer Anthony Gottlieb, former executive editor of The Economist and author of The Dream of Reason, a history of philosophy from ancient times to the Renaissance, described Romano's book as "ambitious" and "an encyclopedic survey of the life of the mind in the United States," as well as "convincing" in its central claim that "America is not nearly so dumbed down as its detractors at home like to say." Gottlieb added, "Romano is enlightening when he analyzes American intellectual life and illustrates its liveliness." At the same time, Gottlieb strongly rejected Romano's view that the largely forgotten Greek thinker Isocrates makes a better model for American philosophy than the traditionally esteemed Socrates.
