Carlin Romano lectures at Chautauqua Institution in New York

Annenberg’s Carlin Romano delivered the keynote lecture on "Radicalism in America" at Chautauqua Institution's 5,000-seat amphitheater on Monday, August 13. The talk launched the eighth of nine summer theme weeks at the historic educational and cultural institution, founded in 1874, which has been presenting prominent speakers since the days of William James and Theodore Roosevelt. Other speakers during "Radicalism" week included theoretical physicist Freeman Dyson, Stella Remington, the former head of MI5 (Britain's CIA), and David Rohde, the Pulitzer-prize-winning former New York Times correspondent who was held captive in Afghanistan by the Taliban.

 

Romano's recently published book, America the Philosophical, continues to receive prominent reviews around the country. The Aug. 6 issue of the New Yorker credited Romano with providing "a comprehensive intellectual history from Emerson to Rawls," and the September/October issue of Harvard Magazine, the alumni magazine of Harvard University, recommends the book, describing it as "brilliantly" argued.
