A poster by Annenberg doctoral students Brooke Duffy, Tara Liss-Marino, and Professor Katherine Sender was given the “Most Innovative Poster” award during the recent National Communication Association annual conference in San Francisco.

Poster title: “A Peek Behind the Gilt Curtain: Reflexivity in Television Depictions of Media Industries.”

Abstract

At the same time that traditional media industries are facing a moment of profound crisis, representations of cultural production are on an upswing. In this paper, we argue that televisual depictions of the creative industries are uniquely placed to respond to the contemporary era of technological convergence, financial destabilization, and deprofessionalized production. Our textual analysis of five TV series reveals several distinct, but overlapping ways, through which reflexivity reinscribes the boundaries around media production.
