Annenberg Prof. Marwan M. Kraidy named Penn Fellow for 2011

Annenberg’s Marwan M. Kraidy, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Communication, has been named a Penn Fellow for 2011, part of the third cohort of University of Pennsylvania faculty to receive this honor.
           
Begun in 2009, the Penn Fellows Program provides leadership development to select Penn faculty in mid-career. It includes opportunities to build networks across the university, meet with distinguished academic leaders, think strategically about university governance, and participate in monthly dinners with prominent speakers from within Penn and beyond. Only six University of Pennsylvania faculty members are selected as Penn Fellows each year.
           
Prof. Kraidy is an internationally-recognized expert on Middle East media. His interests center on the role of media institutions in shaping social experiences of modernity in the non-West. He has written extensively on how local and national societies cope with cultural globalization. He is the author of Hybridity or the Cultural Logic of Globalization (Temple University Press, 2005), Reality Television and Arab Politics: Contention in Public Life (Cambridge University Press, 2010), Arab Television Industries (British Film Institute/Palgrave Macmillan, with Joe Khalil), and is the co-editor (with Annenberg’s Katherine Sender, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Communication) of The Politics of Reality Television: Global Perspectives (Routledge, 2010).

Prof. Kraidy is the second member of the Annenberg standing faculty to become a Penn Fellow. In 2009 John L. Jackson, Jr., Ph.D., the Richard Perry Professor of Communication and Anthropology, became a member of the inaugural cohort of Penn Fellows.
