David Eisenhower writes about presidential speeches in The Los Angeles Times

Annenberg’s David Eisenhower, Director of the Institute for Public Service, wrote an opinion column for the January 25, 2011 edition of The Los Angeles Times. Talking about the upcoming State of the Union speech by President Obama, David writes about the era of civility in messages that existed 50 years ago when his grandfather, former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, delivered his farewell address as compared with the inaugural speech of former President John F. Kennedy.

 

“Implicit in both speeches was a traditional American theme of optimism, of faith in a better future, which proved justified in the years to come as the United States prevailed in the Cold War, wrote new chapters in civil rights, and enjoyed ever higher levels of prosperity,” David writes.
