				<title>Annenberg Undergraduate students honored at graduation ceremony</title>

				<description>&#x3C;div&#x3E;The Annenberg School for Communication honored graduates of the communication major during a ceremony at the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, May 13.&#x26;nbsp;Several graduating students were honored for their academic accomplishments.&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x3C;b&#x3E;Eisenhower Award&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;/b&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div style=&quot;text-align: center;&quot;&#x3E;&#x3C;img width=&quot;550&quot; height=&quot;300&quot; src=&quot;http://www.asc.upenn.edu/userfiles/image/Eisenhower_Award.jpg&quot; alt=&quot;&quot; /&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;em&#x3E;Left, Monica Collinsgru and John L. Jackson, Jr.; Right, Monica Gojman and Michael X. Delli Carpini&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;Maura A. Collinsgru and Monica Gojman were recipients of the Communication and Public Service (Eisenhower) Award, which &#x3C;span&#x3E;recognizes a graduating senior who is part of the Communication and Public Service program and has completed an outstanding honors thesis on a topic related to either public policy of public service issues.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;Ms. Collinsgru&#x26;rsquo;s thesis is titled &#x26;ldquo;Evidence of Personal Narrative in the Leadership Rhetoric of Alice Paul, Dorothy Day, and Eleanor Roosevelt.&#x26;rdquo; The work combines rhetorical and historical analyses to explore the role personal narrative played in the leadership of three twentieth century women: Alice Paul, Dorothy Day, and Eleanor Roosevelt. Her use of narrative theory to analyze the speech and writings of these women is a unique approach that brings new insights into women who have been the subjects of many biographers.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
Ms. Gojman&apos;s thesis is titled &#x26;quot;Signed, Sealed, Delivered: NAFTA and the Marriage between Mexico and the United States.&#x26;nbsp; Using the metaphor of marriage to structure her analysis, she examines how NAFTA shaped the relationship between the U.S. and Mexico.&#x26;nbsp; Her thesis is impressive for her ability to integrate historical and rhetorical analysis of presidential speeches, letters, conversations and other documents with her analysis of media coverage with NAFTA and her in-depth interviews with key advisors to Mexican presidents.&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x3C;b&#x3E;George Gerbner Award&#x3C;/b&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

Her work is remarkable for the depth of her analysis, her integration of her findings with previous research, and her use of developmental theory to shape the implications of her findings.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;Ms. Norbitz&#x26;rsquo; thesis, &#x3C;span&#x3E;entitled &#x26;ldquo;The Unique Role of the Implicit Association Test in Assessing the Effects of an Educational Video on Adolescents&#x26;rsquo; Implicit Out Group Attitudes,&#x26;rdquo; was developed out her work with the Annenberg Public Policy Center where research was being conducted to see how&#x3C;/span&#x3E; exposure to compelling video can decrease discrimination amongst adolescents.&#x26;nbsp;Annie developed original hypotheses for the study, helped recruit subjects and improved the quality of an intervention that will affect students in over 40,000 high school classrooms.&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;em&#x3E;Nora Draper&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;Annenberg doctoral student &#x3C;a href=&quot;http://www.asc.upenn.edu/Students/Graduate/GraduateStudentProfile.aspx?id=65&#x26;amp;pageType=grad&quot;&#x3E;Nora Draper&#x3C;/a&#x3E; has published the article &#x26;ldquo;Is Your Teen at Risk? Discourses of adolescent sexting in the United States television news&#x26;rdquo; in the &#x3C;i&#x3E;Journal of Children and Media&#x3C;/i&#x3E; (Vol. 6, Issue 2).&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;Abstract:&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x26;ldquo;Sexting&#x26;rdquo; is the term commonly used to refer to the transfer of nude or semi-nude pictures or videos between mobile devices. This paper contextualizes the reaction to the practice of sexting among adolescents by exploring legal responses and reviewing the literature on teens and cell phone use. The purpose of the paper is to identify, explore and analyze the key themes emerging from the coverage of teen sexting by television news in the United States. The author explores three primary themes that emerge from the broadcast discourse: preference for technologically deterministic explanations; reliance on gender-differentiated scenarios; and, a preference for solutions involving surveillance. This paper further explores whether the discourse around sexting can be understood using media panic theory. Noting the problematic conflation of risk and harm in the discourse, the author concludes by suggesting avenues for future research regarding the creation and transmission of sexual images using digital devices.&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;em&#x3E;Susan Mello&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;Annenberg doctoral student &#x3C;a href=&quot;http://www.asc.upenn.edu/Students/Graduate/GraduateStudentProfile.aspx?id=56&#x26;amp;pageType=grad&quot;&#x3E;Susan Mello&#x3C;/a&#x3E; has published the article &#x26;ldquo;Selling a super cosmeceutical: Contextualising risk in direct-to-consumer advertising of BOTOX&#x26;reg; Cosmetic&#x26;rdquo; in the journal &#x3C;i&#x3E;Health, Risk &#x26;amp; Society&#x3C;/i&#x3E; (Volume 14, Number 4, pages 385 &#x26;ndash; 398).&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x3C;b&#x3E;Abstract:&#x3C;/b&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;Botulinum Toxin Type A, otherwise known as BOTOX&#x26;reg;, has dramatically changed the face of modern cosmetic medicine. This study examines the communication of the product&apos;s risks and benefits in online direct-to-consumer marketing by Allergan, maker of BOTOX Cosmetic, BOTOX Therapeutic, and BOTOX for Severe Underarm Sweating. Findings suggest that Allergan&apos;s heavy reliance on existing social norms of ideal beauty &#x26;ndash; as youthful, gendered, and self-actualized &#x26;ndash; for marketing BOTOX Cosmetic cultivates a meta-message of greater social and psychological risks associated with &#x3C;i&#x3E;not&#x3C;/i&#x3E; using the product. In addition, the drug&apos;s medical indications are routinely conflated with its cosmetic purpose, resulting in a redefinition of the product as a &#x26;lsquo;super cosmeceutical&#x26;rsquo;. These observations have important implications for how social representations of risk may detract from consumer perceptions of physical harms and further promote risk-taking in the widespread pursuit of idealized beauty.&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

				<title>Rosemary Avance receives fellowship from the University of Utah</title>

&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&quot;http://www.asc.upenn.edu/Students/Graduate/GraduateStudentProfile.aspx?id=61&#x26;amp;pageType=grad&quot;&#x3E;Rosemary Avance&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, a fourth-year doctoral student at the Annenberg School for Communication, is the recipient of a Fellowship in Mormon Studies from the Tanner Humanities Center at the University of Utah.&#x26;nbsp;The first of its kind, the fellowship provides a doctoral candidate with funds to spend a year researching the history, beliefs, and culture of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its members.&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
Ms. Avance&#x26;rsquo;s research project is entitled &#x26;ldquo;Voices and Silences: On the Dialogic Construction of Mormon Identities,&#x26;rdquo; and will consider the ways that modern Mormon identities are rendered from multiple, often conflicting sources: secular authorities, faithful members, the media, and heterodox and former Mormons. Her project seeks to contribute to an understanding of Mormon religious identity as a blend of voices and silences in the ritual sphere.&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
Ms. Avance is currently a doctoral candidate with a focus on religious identity and cultural studies at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. She received an M.A in Communication from the University of Pennsylvania in 2010. Ms. Avance will be in residence at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City for the 2012-2013 school year as she researches and writes her&#x26;nbsp;dissertation on the dialogic construction of Mormon identity in the Internet age.&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
Bob Goldberg, professor of history and director of the Tanner Humanities Center, describes Avance&#x26;rsquo;s research as &#x26;ldquo;an intriguing examination of the formation of LDS social and religious identities in the current &#x26;lsquo;Mormon moment.&#x26;rsquo;&#x26;nbsp;The Tanner Humanities Center is excited to extend this research opportunity to Ms. Avance.&#x26;rdquo;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

				<title>Doctoral Student Jingwen Zhang to participate in Harvard summer internship</title>

				<description>&#x3C;div style=&quot;text-align: center;&quot;&#x3E;&#x3C;img height=&quot;290&quot; width=&quot;193&quot; alt=&quot;&quot; src=&quot;http://www.asc.upenn.edu/userfiles/image/Jingwen_Zhang_news.jpg&quot; /&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;em&#x3E;Jingwen Zhang&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;Annenberg doctoral student Jingwen Zhang will attend the Harvard Berkman Summer Internship (June 4 &#x26;ndash; August 10) in Cambridge, MA.&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;Each summer, the &#x3C;a href=&quot;http://youthandmedia.org/&quot;&#x3E;Youth and Media lab&#x3C;/a&#x3E; &#x3C;span&#x3E;at Harvard&apos;s Berkman Center selects a group of full-time interns who share an interest in the exploration and study of youth and their engagement with media. Once selected, the interns complete a two-month program working alongside the Youth and Media Team and other members of the Berkman community where they explore issues that relate to youth and their engagement with media.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;During this summer, Jingwen Zhang is going to work with Dr.&#x26;nbsp;John Palfrey and Dr.&#x26;nbsp;Urs Gasser with other interns to&#x26;nbsp;study youth sexual health-information seeking behavior, which entails great implication for developing online sexual health communication programs. Both interviews and query logs will be employed to understand the searching dynamics. Specific research questions may include: 1) What are the motivations for youth to search sexual health information online? 2) How does searching online interact with seeking information offline to inform decision? 3) For specific concerns (e.g. pregnancy), what are the searching processes? These research projects will extend the literature on youth digital literacy and health communication involving social media applications.&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

				<title>Dolores Albarracín joins Annenberg as Martin Fishbein Chair in Communication</title>

&#x3C;em&#x3E;Dolores Albarrac&#x26;iacute;n, Ph.D.&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;Dolores Albarrac&#x26;iacute;n, Ph.D., has joined the Annenberg School for Communication as a full professor and the first Martin Fishbein Chair in Communication, beginning in the Fall 2012 term.&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp; &#x3C;br /&#x3E;
Prof. Albarrac&#x26;iacute;n comes to Annenberg from the University of Illinois, where she held professorships in both the departments of psychology and business administration.&#x26;nbsp;She describes herself as a social psychologist, studying attitudes and persuasion from a social cognitive point of view.&#x26;nbsp;Her major research interests include motivational processes in attitude and behavior change, action goals and cognitive processes, and applications of social cognition to disease prevention programs.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp; &#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x26;ldquo;Dolores is one of the world&#x26;rsquo;s leading scholars of the role of communication in persuasion and attitude and behavior change,&#x26;rdquo; said Michael X. Delli Carpini, Ph.D., Professor of Communication and Walter H. Annenberg Dean. &#x26;ldquo;Her coming to Annenberg strengthens what is already the number one health communication and media effects program in the country.&#x26;nbsp;I can think of no more fitting person to hold the Martin Fishbein Chair.&#x26;rdquo;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp; &#x3C;br /&#x3E;
The Martin Fishbein Chair in Communication is named in honor of &#x3C;a href=&quot;http://www.asc.upenn.edu/news/NewsDetail.aspx?nid=631&quot;&#x3E;former Annenberg Prof. Martin Fishbein, Ph.D., the Harry C. Coles, Jr. Chair in Communication (1936 &#x26;ndash; 2009)&#x3C;/a&#x3E;.&#x26;nbsp;Prof. Fishbein was Prof. Albarrac&#x26;iacute;n&#x26;rsquo;s thesis director during her studies for a master of arts in psychology at the University of Illinois, as well as her dissertation chair (with Robert S. Wyer, Jr. as thesis director).&#x26;nbsp;He also was her co-author on several academic articles.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp; &#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x26;ldquo;Training graduate students is what we live for in academia,&#x26;rdquo; Prof. Albarrac&#x26;iacute;n said during Annenberg&#x26;rsquo;s prospective student&#x26;rsquo;s day earlier this year.&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;ldquo;It is a privilege to work with and train brilliant people.&#x26;rdquo;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
&#x3C;div&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp; &#x3C;br /&#x3E;
Prof. Albarrac&#x26;iacute;n received a doctoral degree in Social Psychology from the University of Illinois, and received a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from the Universidad de Belgrano in Buenos Aires, Argentina.&#x26;nbsp;She is the recipient of nearly two dozen academic awards and honors, and her work has been continuously funded by the national institutes of health since receiving her Ph.D. in 1997.&#x26;nbsp;She is the author/editor of two books &#x26;ndash; including &#x3C;i&#x3E;Prediction and change of health behavior: Applying the theory of reasoned action approach&#x3C;/i&#x3E; (Lawrence Erlbaum, 2007) which she co-edited with Icek Ajzen and &#x3C;a href=&quot;http://www.asc.upenn.edu/Faculty/Faculty-Bio.aspx?id=142&quot;&#x3E;Annenberg&#x26;rsquo;s Prof. Robert Hornik&#x3C;/a&#x3E;.&#x26;nbsp;Additionally Prof. Albarrac&#x26;iacute;n is the lead or co-author of more than 80 published articles and/or book chapters.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/div&#x3E;

&#x3C;div&#x3E;This article addresses a major gap in the transitional justice literature by exploring the role of the media in transitional justice processes. We offer a framework for analyzing the information environment in which media intervention and transitional justice occurs. We suggest an approach that can offer a more nuanced understanding of information flows and the ways in which key actors use communication to compete for loyalty in the political marketplace. Several tools for conceptualizing the approaches toward media during transitional justice processes are offered, including the use of law, force, subsidy, and negotiation. Examples of how these tools have been used both effectively and ineffectively by international actors in the former Yugoslavia illuminate our arguments.&#x3C;/div&#x3E;
