Application to the Major

Communication students
at the 2011 Undergraduate Graduation Ceremony.
Most undergraduate courses in communication are open for enrollment to students
throughout the University. However, obtaining the Bachelor of Arts Degree with a
major in communication requires formal application and acceptance. The degree is
granted by the College of Arts and Sciences or the College of Liberal and Professional
Studies, although the major curriculum is designed, administered, and instructed
by the Annenberg School for Communication. All decisions concerning admission to
the major are made by The Annenberg School.
When to Apply
Students may apply for admission to the major during either the second semester
of their sophomore year or the first semester of their junior year. Applications
are not accepted in any other semesters. Exceptions are permitted only for students
transferring from other universities with junior class standing, whose applications
will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Application Requirements
Students must meet the following requirements prior to application.
- Completion of Communication 125, Communication 130, or Communication 123;
- Completion or enrollment in a total of at least three communication courses, including
those completed under 1 above;
- A cumulative grade-point average of 2.0 or higher in all University of Pennsylvania
courses.
How to Apply
Alison Berstecher, Director Student
Services and Registrar, provides academic and procedural advising for prospective
communication majors. Students are encouraged to consult with Ms. Berstecher well
in advance of application in order to match the requirements for the major to their
particular situation and to draft a tentative curriculum.
Information and application forms can be obtained from Ms. Berstecher in the Undergraduate
Office (Room 204 in The Annenberg School).
