According to a recent Kaiser Family Foundation report, there is an ever increasing array of new products being offered to parents and their babies, including electronic touchpads, educational videos, and even computer games. Project FLIP seeks to understand whether or not babies learn from sources like these.
We are looking for families in West Philadelphia with 6-month-old children to participate in our study. We plan to work with each family for about 3 years. Families will participate for one hour, almost always in their own home, 1-2 days every 3 months. Parents will answer some survey questions and we will observe their children’s behavior, or have the children do simple tasks. We will also have the families read, watch a video, and (for older children) use a computer together. During the visit we will videotape the family for coding purposes. More detailed descriptions of the tasks involved are available upon request. All procedures have been approved by the University of Pennsylvania Institutional Review Board.
We know that families are busy and that this will take a lot of their time. We pay people $50 each time we visit (four times a year) and also bring small gifts.
If you would like to be a part of this study, please fill out the form below and someone will contact you for more information.
We look forward to working with your family to learn more about the way kids learn!
