New Research Presented at the 2008 NCA Annual Convention

11/23/2008

Sarah Vaala and Matthew Lapierre, researchers within the Children's Media Lab and doctoral candidates at the Annenberg School for Communication, presented new research at the 2008 National Communication Association Convention in San Diego, CA.   Using eyetracking methodology, their research looks at the role that text complexity and movement play on children's attention to onscreen print. Results from the study indicated the longest looks and the greatest percentage of time fixating to print occurred when movement and text complexity were low.  Additionally, they found that children whose mothers had at least a college degree were more likely to attend to onscreen text.   The results have implications for the incorporation of onscreen print in children's educational television.
