The George Gerbner Lecture in Communication was established in 1988, by University President Sheldon Hackney and Provost Michael Aiken, to honor Dr. Gerbner before his retirement in the spring of 1988. The annual public event features a lecture given by an Annenberg School alumnus.
The first Gerbner Lecture was given in April 1988, by Daniel Schiller, ASC M.A. 1976, Ph.D. 1978, Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, UCLA.
