Thank you for your interest in graduate study at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. Founded through the generosity and vision of publisher, diplomat and philanthropist Walter Annenberg, the Annenberg School is devoted to furthering our understanding of the role of communication in public life through research, education, and service. This mission is clearly evident in the fact that we fully fund all of our students with a stipend, health insurance and tuition waiver.

We have assembled what we consider to be the ideal components of a top doctoral program:

  • Faculty members who are internationally regarded as experts in their research areas.
  • a diverse group of exceptionally talented graduate students
  • and the financial, cultural and academic resources necessary to support our faculty and students in advanced research across a wide variety of topics related to communication.

We are honored to have been ranked #1 in the nation in the areas of Critical-Cultural Communication, Health Communication, Mass Communication, and Political Communication by the National Communication Association’s most recent Doctoral Reputation Study. These broad topics cover a lot of territory, including the possibility of concentrated coursework in areas such as children, family & media; new media technologies; global communication; and media institutions.

We educate our students in the theories, substance and methods of communication research and position them to become leading academic and professional positions in the field. Our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds and undergraduate majors, and they share a strong interest in communication topics, conducting research, and excelling at what they do. Please take some time to read through these pages to learn if Annenberg is the right place for you to accomplish your professional goals. If it is, we encourage you to apply to be part of the Annenberg community.
