Penn-In-Beijing Summer Abroad
The Penn-In-Beijing 2008 Summer Abroad Program has been co-developed by the Center for Global Communication Studies at the Annenberg School for Communication and the College of General Studies. From May 26-June 20, 2008, undergraduate students interested in learning about media effects, the Beijing Olympics, and issues in culture and intellectual property in a Chinese and comparative context can do so in Beijing during the Summer of the 2008 Olympics.
One advantage of this program is its inclusion of Chinese students, from Tsinghua University, learning side-by-side with the Penn students in the classroom. The course content is also enriched with a series of cultural excursions that take place on Fridays and Saturdays.
Educational excursions are still being finalized but may include: a visit to the Olympic Green; State Council Information Office; key commercial spaces representative of the new Chinese economy; Hutongs, the traditional neighborhoods threatened by China's modernization bid; The Great Wall; Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City; other parks and museums; and Sohu, one of China's largest internet portals.
Two courses will be taught M-R; both counting toward the Communication major:
This course examines the political, social, and cultural influence of international media events at national and international levels, using China and the 2008 Beijing Olympics as a case study. Students will be introduced to concepts for analyzing and thinking about the ways that major media events challenge traditional paradigms and customs both in China and on the global stage.
Costs:
Participants in the program pay a tuition fee for both courses, and a program fee which covers the cultural activities program, residence in a hotel, and most meals. Students are expected to cover the costs of their visa and airplane tickets independently. The tuition and program fees will be available by the end of November.
For more information, please contact Sylvie Beauvais at the Center for Global Communication Studies, or the Program Director Peter Decherney.
Applications for Penn-in-Beijing can be submitted between November, 2 and March, 1.
