CURRENT POSITION
Associate Lecturer, Department of Communication Arts, University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI
EDUCATION
Ph.D., Communication, Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, 2007
Dissertation Title: Mobile
Sociality & Spatial Practice: A Qualitative Fieldstudy of New Social
Networking Technologies
Dissertation Abstract: My dissertation examines three case studies of mobile social networks (Dodgeball, BEDD, and SMS.ac) in order to explore the relationship between social interaction, spatial practices, and mobile communication. Through participant observation, field observations, and interviews, I compare and contrast social interactions between case studies. I identify three functions of mobile social network systems: social connecting, social congregating, and social cataloguing. First, I discuss in the ways mobile social technology is used to form, strengthen, and maintain social connections. Second, I describe how mobile applications can help bring people physically together in public space through the mobile exchange of social information. Finally, I discuss the various ways informants think about the collection of mobile social behavior and explore how this mobile cataloguing links social network information to space.
