Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies

Description

The Bachelor of Arts Degree with a major in Communication is granted by Penn’s College of Arts and Sciences, but the major curriculum is designed, administered, and instructed by the Annenberg School for Communication.

Reporting directly to the Dean of the school, the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies supervises all aspects of the Annenberg School for Communication’s undergraduate program.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervise the Director of Student Services & Registrar.
  • Teach two undergraduate courses per year.
  • Work with the School of Arts and Sciences on the administration of the major at the University level.
  • Advise the Dean of the Annenberg School on matters concerning the undergraduate program.
  • Establish standards for admission to the major and completion of major requirements.
  • Chair the undergraduate curriculum committee and supervise proposed changes to the program or curriculum.
  • Manage the hiring process for Lecturers and supervise teaching.
  • Assist new instructors with course and syllabus development.
  • Monitor the administration of the Senior Honors Thesis Seminar, Communication & Public Service Program, Internship Program, and Annenberg in Washington Program.
  • Work to resolve academic or other issues affecting students. Consult Student Advising Office or other Penn resource offices as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Graduate Studies Office on the assignment of graduate teaching fellows to faculty. Monitor and advise graduate teaching fellows as needed.
  • Assist with the preparation/design of semester curriculum and the advance scheduling of classes each semester.
  • Share information with faculty about the undergraduate program as needed. Monitor the pedagogical effectiveness of faculty and provide feedback as needed.
  • Create programming and events to enhance the undergraduate experience for Communication majors.
  • Assist the Director of Student Services with the planning and execution of the undergraduate graduation ceremony. Represent ASC at all undergraduate graduation activities.
  • Assist the Director of Student Services in maintaining and updating the undergraduate program webpages on the school’s website. 
  • Oversee the Undergraduate Studies budget and approve related expenses.
  • Create an annual departmental report for the School of Arts and Sciences.

Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in Communication or a related discipline and 5 to 7 years of related experience required. Teaching and service experience working with undergraduates is required. Teaching experience should include both the large lecture and small seminar format. Administrative experience and demonstrated decision-making and problem-solving skills required. Candidates must have the ability to think critically and strategically, and have excellent communication and customer service-related skills. Demonstrated ability to work with students, faculty, staff, and administrators needed. Demonstrated leadership, interpersonal, and organizational skills are required, and candidates must be able to work independently and collaboratively.
