Students who wish to pursue individualized projects for credit may apply for independent study approval. Major credit is offered only for independent studies taught by Annenberg faculty. Independent studies supervised by professors from other departments in the University may count as Communication cognate courses. Major credit is not offered for independent studies pursued abroad or transferred from other universities.
Students are responsible to find a professor with relevant expertise who is willing to supervise their independent study. These arrangements should be made in advance of the semester in which the project will be conducted.
Independent study proposals are subject to approval by the supervising professor and the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies. A designated form that includes a topic proposal and preliminary reading list signed by the supervising professor and the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies must be submitted to the Undergraduate Office prior to registration. The deadline for submitting all independent study proposals is the first week of the semester.
Juniors who wish to pursue individualized projects in their senior year have the option of several more structured formats. These include the Senior Honors thesis, the Senior COMPS thesis, and the Senior Research Track thesis. Please read about them here. An informational meeting is held each spring for juniors considering these options.
Students considering any individualized study project should consult with the Director of Student Services in advance of the semester in which they hope to pursue their projects.
