Democracy, Freedom of Speech, Civic Engagement, and Mobilization in These Times

  • Penn Museum, Rainey Auditorium
Audience Open to the Public

Join us for a panel discussion at the Penn Museum as part of Penn & Philly 250: A Celebration of Community, Culture, and Freedom!

About the Panel

America's founders idealized freedom of speech and press as bastions of democracy. In later years, Americans added civic engagement as a necessary pillar to sustain democratic norms. Today, our ideas of freedom of speech (and press) have become polarizing issues in the public sphere. Meanwhile, we continue to debate what it means to have true civic engagement. This workshop explores America's evolving ideals at the intersection of media, democracy, and civic engagement. Featuring Philadelphia City Council Member Jamie Gauthier, Annenberg School Dean Sarah Banet-Weiser, and WHYY  Vice President of News & Civic Dialogue Sarah Glover, this conversation seeks to broaden our understanding of the work that goes into building and sustaining a democracy.
