Witty and Gritty: Editorial Art of The Philadelphia Inquirer celebrates the enduring power of editorial cartoons to challenge, entertain, and inspire public conversation.

About the Event: 

Featuring more than 150 original cartoons and artworks by Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonists Tony Auth and Signe Wilkinson, this exhibition explores decades of American life through themes including politics, media, social issues, and Philadelphia culture. These witty, incisive, and hard-hitting works reveal how a single image can spark debate, challenge authority, and capture the spirit of an era. The exhibit will be on view at the Annenberg School for the 2026-2027 academic year.

  • 5:00-5:30pm Opening Reception

  • 5:30-6:30pm Cartoon Exhibit Discussion

  • 6:30-7:30pm Reception Continues

About the Speakers:

Signe Headshot

Signe Wilkinson is the Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist best known for her distinguished career at The Philadelphia Daily News and The Philadelphia Inquirer, where her incisive commentary and distinctive artistic voice helped shape public discourse for more than three decades. Her work has earned national recognition for its wit, insight, and engagement with political and civic life.

 

Leopoldbiophoto

David Leopold is an acclaimed curator, author, and archivist specializing in the history of American cartooning and comic art. He has organized numerous exhibitions and written extensively on the lives and work of influential cartoonists, including Tony Auth.
