On July 2, Professor Carolyn Marvin participated in a freewheeling roundtable discussion in San Francisco with political activist Tom Hayden, former California state legislator, and John Diaz, editor of the editorial page of the San Francisco Chronicle, on the topic “Whose Flag Is It, Anyway?” The program was sponsored by the Presidio Trust of San Francisco in conjunction with an exhibition of the “The American Flag: Two Centuries of Concord and Conflict” at the Officers’ Club of the Presidio Trust of San Francisco.
The Zaricor Flag Collection, currently on exhibit at the Presidio of San Francisco, is one of the great American flag collections. Its owner is Ben Zaricor, a 1960s political activist, now the CEO of Good Earth Teas, who began it in 1970 when he saw a college student beat up for wearing a flag shirt. Zaricor is committed to the idea that the flag belongs to all Americans of all opinions. His collection of 1,500 historical flags from the 18th to the 21st century is rich and eloquent testimony to that understanding.
