Professor Klaus Krippendorff was invited by the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences at the University of Enna “Kore” in Sicily to present the “Lectio magistralis” at the First International Conference on Qualitative Research Methods and be one of two scientific coordinators of this September 1-3, 2011, gathering of scholars. His address, titled “Digital Challenges to Content Analysis” compared ethnographic methods, the dominant grounded theory approach of Glaser and Strauss to content analysis, discussed methodological criteria for their potential validity, differentiated the unique abilities and severe limitations of these two research methods, and finally analyzed how digital media on the one hand, and text analysis software on the other hand impacts the analysis of textual matter.
