Research by Undergrads Placitella and Shen Honored

Graduating major Jennarose Placitella has won 1 of only 2 Phi Beta Kappa Thesis Prizes awarded to Penn undergraduates this year. Her thesis, "Crazy or Calculated?  Dissecting the Persuasive and Propaganda Techniques in Islamic State Videos on Twitter", comes with a cash prize of $300.00. Her thesis was co-directed by Dr. Kim Woolf and David Eisenhower, J.D.

Both Jennarose and  another graduating major, Sunny Shen, are winners of 2 out of the 10 Rose Undergraduate Research Awards conferred this year  by the Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships (CURF) for outstanding undergraduate theses.  Sunny Shen’s thesis was, “The Harry Potter Effect: Predicting the Box Office Performance of Y.A. Novel Movie Adaptations.”  Each Rose Award carries a cash prize of $1,000. Sunny Shen’s thesis supervisors were Dr. Kim Woolf and Professor Paul Messaris.
