Research by Williams Looks at Statehouse Reporting

Research by doctoral student Alex T. Williams finds there is a decline in the ranks of reporters covering state capitals.

An article he researched and wrote with Mark Jurkowitz, associate director for the Pew Research Center’s Journalism Project, looked at the number of state house reporters as compared with each state’s population.  His research finds that “some of the largest states – with some of the largest statehouse press contingents – end up at or near the bottom in the rankings” when the reporter-to-population ratio measurement is applied. The article includes an interactive map of the United States showing the ratio on a state-by-state basis.
