Research by Williams Into the Pay Gap Bewtween News Reporting and Public Relations

Doctoral student Alex T. Williams writes for the Pew Research Center that there is a growing pay gap between journalism and public relations (P.R.). Williams points out that, in 2013, there was a nearly $20,000 a year gap in pay between public relations specialists and news reporters ($54,940 for P.R. professionals versus $35,600 for reporters, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics). Additionally, P.R. specialists outnumber reporters today by nearly five to one. This gap in both pay and personnel make it more difficult for the news media to properly interrogate and vet claims made by P.R. specialists.
