Nour Halabi

Published in 2013 against the backdrop of the political unrest that has gripped Syria since March 2011, Rebecca Joubin’s The Politics of Love analyzes a repertoire of over five decades of Syrian television drama to offer insight into Syrian politics before and during the uprisings. Based on six years of fieldwork and an extensive analysis of 250 serials, the book uncovers the nuanced political critique embedded in constructions of gender and metaphors of love, sexuality, and marriage in Syrian television and their treatment of authority and power in family relationships.
