Tong Yuan

Visiting Scholar, Annenberg School for Communication

Tong Yuan is a Ph.D. candidate at the College of Media and International Culture of Zhejiang University and a visiting scholar at the Annenberg School for Communication. He also graduated from Sichuan University with a master’s degree.

His research areas mainly include cultural studies, communication theory, digital media, publishing, and media literacy. His current work centers on the hegemonic culture and counter-hegemonic practices in contemporary China, specifically, how do the mainstream media, political power, and economic power shape the popular culture in China? How does the popular culture work in contradictory contexts? As a current affairs commentator and film critic, he has published many current affairs review articles and film reviews. And also he is doing the research of media literacy training model in ethnic minority regions of western China.

He has published research articles in outlets including Social Science Research, Xinhua Digest, Chinese Editor, Publishing Research, and Editorial Friend.
