Baird Howland, Ph.D.

Baird Howland studies political discourse, American media diets, and the role of the news media in contemporary politics.
Baird Howland is a data scientist and scholar of communications. The dissertation he is currently developing includes a theory of ongoing narratives in political discourse and analyzes the narratives made available by the American news media over the past ten years. He is a member of the Computational Social Science Lab at Penn.
Originally trained in physics, Baird's approach to communications research draws on several disciplines including literary theory, political science, computer science, and natural language processing. Outside of academic spaces, he has worked in data science, education, and basketball.
