A devoted runner, Cameron Hayes ran the Philadelphia half marathon and will be running another marathon this fall in Switzerland! This semester Cameron is studying abroad in Barcelona where she’s learning about the field of Communication from a completely new perspective. Cameron is a proud member of Kite and Key Society, Class Ambassadors, the Upstander Initiative, Swipe Out Hunger, and the West Philly Tutoring Project at Penn.
James Hiebert enjoys exploring the world through excursions such as visits to industrial sites in Northeastern Pennsylvania (!) or field trips to the Democratic and Republican National Conventions through COMM 482: Conventions, Debates, and Campaigns. On campus, James is the president of Men Against Rape and Sexual Assault, where he helps facilitate conversations about consent and masculinity to build healthy and safe spaces. He also serves as Vice President of the Government and Politics Association. At its Thanksgiving potluck dinner last year, James baked three pecan pies which were gobbled up in no time.
Nick Joyner is Editor-in-Chief of 34th Street Magazine, a member of The Daily Pennsylvanian Board of Directors, a member of the Philomathean Society, and a mentor for the Penn LGBT Center. One of his favorite memories since coming to Penn is his participation in the Penn Media Scholars in China program two summers ago where he had the opportunity to live and learn in China for one month. Nick enjoys exploring LGBT history and theory and draws his inspiration from the activists, artists, and journalists who’ve spearheaded the modern American LGBT rights movement over the past fifty years.
Through various programs at Penn, Raquel Laguerre has traveled to places like Israel, Rwanda, and Poland. She appreciates any opportunity to travel and learn about different lifestyles, people, and careers, in addition to learning more about herself. When she’s not traveling, Raquel keeps busy on campus as a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated and Penn Fashion Collective. Passionate about health and wellness, Raquel made the decision to go vegan four years ago. “To me,” she says, “health is wealth!”
Brittany Levy is a marketing associate for 34th Street Magazine, Chief External Affairs Officer of Kappa Alpha Theta, and an intern for the Jewish Heritage Program. In her free time, Brittany can be found indulging in her obsession of listening to podcasts — current favorites are “Revisionist History” with Malcolm Gladwell and “How I Built This” with Guy Raz — or dining at Hummus Grill. (She is their self-proclaimed Chief Frequent Customer!)
Valerie Rube has been a committed gymnast since she was four years old and is now the captain of the Penn Women’s Gymnastics team. Vault is her best event. She also is a member of the executive board for the Penn Catholic Newman Center, where she is supported by a strong and welcoming faith community. Her favorite memory at Penn was seeing DJ and producer Zedd perform at the 2017 Spring Fling Concert.
Hadeel Saab is a member of Penn Arab Student Society, Humans of UPenn, a volunteer at CHOP, and the President of the Lebanese Club. Connecting with other students in the Lebanese and Arab community has been a huge part of her Penn experience. Through her involvement on campus, she hopes to contribute to a welcoming and supportive atmosphere as it can make all the difference in someone’s experience at Penn. Something that most people don’t know about her? She trained in classical piano for 8 years!
