About the Event

In the wake of a landmark victory at the UK Supreme Court, Uber is now required to give U.K. drivers the minimum wage, pensions and holiday pay, after a recent court ruling that said they should be classified as workers and entitled to such benefits. Join MIC as we talk to the two organizers who took Uber to court and won, as well as other driver organizers and activists across the world on what this precedent might mean for rideshare drivers across the globe.

Speakers

Panelists include Yaseen Aslam and James Farrar, former Uber drivers and the two lead claimants in the successful tribunal that fought Uber for employee rights in the UK.

Respondents:

  • Zweli Ngwenya, Johannesburg, South Africa, The Movement — Zweli Ngwenya has been an Uber driver since 2015, and he is a member of a group called The Movement that fights for Uber drivers rights.
  • Ali Razak, Philadelphia, USA, Philadelphia Drivers Union — Ali Razak, a founding member of the Philadelphia Drivers Union, was one of the earliest leaders in the fight for justice for app-drivers. His federal case was named in Uber's IPO as a 'significant threat.'
  • Tonje Ettesvoll came to the US from Norway 7 years ago and has been a full time driver with Uber and Lyft for over 4 years. She is an organizer with Rideshare Drivers United in San Diego.

The event will be moderated by Todd Wolfson, MIC Center Co-Director.
